Call To Action
West Coast Conference
August 8-10, 1997
A report by Pat McArron

It was a privilege for me to participate in the first of its kind conference in the western states.  Held on the very attractive campus of Claremont-McKenna College, the conference was packed with terrific seminars and speeches.  This was a time for mutual support in our hopes and our efforts.

Nearly 300 people registered for all or part of the conf.

The conf was formally opened after dinner on Friday night, August 8. With a greeting from Evi Quinn, an inspiration in her own right.  Tom Fox, editor of NCR, gave the opening address "The Church that follows John Paul II, Challenges for a new century".  A social gathering followed in McKenna Hall.

All  day Saturday was spent in seminars.  The keynote address on Saturday morning was given by Michael Crosby, OFM, "Renewal and Becoming the Community of the Beloved Disciple".  Excellent.

Saturday night's plenary session was given by Dr. Patricia Martens, "Human Sexuality and Conscience".  In her address she made a point of giving recognition to Dignity for the excellent contributions we have made in the are of sexuality and conscience.

The 3 day conference was packed with information and exchange of ideas.

I attended a 2 part seminar on Vatican II which was an outstanding review of the council and what is available to us today to make sure that there is continued movement toward realizing the goals of the council.  Outstanding seminars.

Dr. Carmel McEnroy, RSM delivered the homily at the closing Eucharistic celebration on Sunday.  She received an immediate standing ovation for her homily.

Several members of Dignity attended this conference representing , San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Fernando Valley.  Tom Kaun was present as well.

Linda Rieder was in charge of all registration and room assignments for the event.

Respectively submitted,

 Pat McArron
