Liturgical Ministry
Duties & Responsibilities
Plan ahead to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the start of Mass to properly prepare.
  • Eucharistic Ministers:

    • before Mass, check the table behind the altar to be sure all items needed for the Mass are there and ready for use.

    • after Mass clean, dry and store chalices, paten, cruets and other items used during the Mass.

  • Lectors:

    • coordinate with each other on the readings and prayers before Mass.

    • take time to review the readings before Mass.

    • allow sufficient time for the community to speak up with their personal petitions during the intercessions at Mass.

  • Sacristans:

    • Prepare the Sanctuary for Mass

    • Arrive early each Sunday to set-up Altar & all other appropriate duties.

  • Greeters:

    • greet & welcome people as they arrive for Mass.

    • provide name tags for everyone as they arrive.

    • make announcements before & at the end of Mass. 

    • assemble congregants for the Offertory. 

  • The duties of greeters are always carried out by a member of the Community Council in accordance with previously established Chapter policies.  Announcements at Mass by other individuals may be made only with the prior approval of the President or a majority of the current Council Members.  Greeters should arrive at Church at least 30 minutes prior to Mass.

  • Music Minister:

    • Select Music for Mass

    • Lead the congregation in music.

    • Play the organ and or piano.

    • Communicate with Liturgy Chairperson

  • Liturgy Chairperson:

    • Assignments: Recruit & Instruct new Readers & Eucharistic Ministers. Prepare, print & distribute the quarterly Liturgy Ministry Schedule.

    • Prepare worship Space: Arrive early each Sunday to make sure everything is set-up and ready when the community arrives.

    • Prepare the Prayer of the Faithful: The prayer should reflect the theme or readings of the day or feast: it can touch on current world or local events & concerns of the local church & community.  Multiple sources or aides are available.

    • Bread, Wine & Grape juice: Bring a small flask of wine and a smaller flask of grape juice and whole wheat pita bread for Mass.  One piece is more than enough for a regular Sunday. Watch to see if it should be split in half when there is a smaller than usual attendance.  Care should be taken that the bread is whole wheat with no additives.  Anything that has been consecrated at the Altar should be consumed.

    • Collaborate with Music Minister:  Communicate with Music Minister any changes, special requests, or helpful hints or ideas for a particular Sunday or feast day.

    • Order Supplies:  Confirm and receive the annual order of "Breaking Bread".  The order is usually confirmed in May and arrives in September or October.  New issue begins with the 1st Sunday of Advent.  Order issues of other liturgical preparation aides such as "Today's Liturgy" and "Pastoral Patterns".

    • Prepare: ashes for Ash Wednesday, palms for Palm Sunday.

    • Altar Linens: Maintain a supply of clean Corporals & Purificators for Mass each week.

    • Communicate:

      • with Chapter President regarding special events or needs;

      • with bulletin editor;

      • with presider in advance concerning the celebration of Mass.

    • Assist:  in preparation for such events as Mary of Magdala, Couples & Singles Blessing, Annual Anniversary Mass, World AIDS Day commemoration, November Remembrance of the deceased etc.
